CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- High Point University volleyball libero Abby Bottomley was named the Big South Conference Co-Woman of the Year for the 2020-21 school year, presented by Musco Sports Lighting the conference announced Thursday afternoon (July 29).

Bottomley is the first-ever student-athlete from High Point University to be named the Big South's Woman of the Year. She is joined by Radford softball player Sydney Fisher as the two co-honorees this year.

The Big South's Woman of the Year Selection Committee voted Bottomley and Fisher the co-honorees among the 10 candidates nominated for the award. The Committee used criteria of Service and Leadership (including community services, campus activities, and leadership positions), Academic Achievement, Athletics Excellence, and a Personal Statement from each candidate. As the Big South's Woman of the Year, Bottomley and Fisher are nominated as the conference's candidates for the national NCAA Woman of the Year Award.

Earning degrees in Finance and Marketing as a double major, Bottomley graduated Summa Cum Laude with a 3.90 GPA as a four-year starter for the Panthers. This past season, Bottomley received honorable mention All-American honors from the AVCA and was named a fourth team All-American by volleyballmag.com, in addition to being selected Second-Team Academic All-America by CoSIDA -- the first in program history. The libero helped the Panthers to a perfect 16-0 regular-season record, the Big South Championship and automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament -- as well as the league's first-ever NCAA Tournament victory. The first libero ever to be voted Big South Player of the Year, Bottomley appeared in all 55 sets for HPU this past spring and tallied 285 digs, a league-leading 5.18 digs per set, 27 service aces, 0.49 service aces per set, and 62 assists. Her 27 total service aces were the most in the Big South this spring, while her per set average ranked second among the league leaders. Bottomley was the lone Big South player to average at least 5.00 digs per set, and her 285 digs were second-most. Her efforts helped the Panthers hold Big South opponents to a .090 hitting percentage in 16 league matches. Bottomley, who became just the sixth player in Big South history to eclipse 2,000 career digs earlier this spring, recorded five 20-dig matches in 2021 -- including 30 in HPU's four-set win over Campbell on March 25. She ended her career at HPU second among active Division I volleyball players with 2,158 digs (sixth in Big South history) and a digs/set average of 5.35 (most in league annals for players with 1,500+).

Off the court, Bottomley interned with the HPU Marketing Department, was a camp director/coach for the Tidewater Volleyball Association, volunteered as a teacher's aide in the Kirkman Park Elementary Spanish Bilingual Program, was a section leader for the Foundation of Hope, helped build a playground for the Roc Solid Foundation, and volunteered at Diamond Springs Elementary with holiday parties and events. While a student at High Point, Bottomley was a two-time Big South Volleyball All-Academic Team member and the 2019 Volleyball Scholar-Athlete of the Year, was named the 2020-21 Tobias Scholar-Athlete of the Year, was a Dean's List honoree all four years, earned the 4.0 Student-Athlete Award in Spring 2019, Spring and Fall 2020 and Fall 2021, was a member of the Alpha Lambda Delta Honor Society, and was a four-time Millis Scholar-Athlete.

Bottomley and Fisher are among 535 overall nominees for NCAA Woman of the Year, which is now in its 31st year.  Established in 1991, the NCAA Woman of the Year award is rooted in Title IX and recognizes graduating female college athletes who have exhausted their NCAA eligibility and distinguished themselves in academics, athletics, service, and leadership throughout their collegiate careers.

The NCAA Woman of the Year Selection Committee, made up of representatives from the NCAA membership, will choose 10 women from each division to make up the Top 30.  The selection committee will determine the top three honorees in each division from the Top 30, and the nine finalists will be announced this fall.  From those nine finalists, the NCAA Committee on Women's Athletics will choose the 2021 NCAA Woman of the Year later this fall.
