Why this extension makes sense
Joe Smith, Lightning beat writer: Point is a superstar, one of the best centers in the league, and the Lightning now have him locked up for the next decade.
Tampa Bay has used this method in previous years of signing their stars a year ahead of free agency (Kucherov, Andrei Vasilevskiy, Victor Hedman). Point gets security and the team gets cost-certainty as it navigates an annual salary cap crunch.
To have Point in the fold at that price will end up being a bargain.
The Lightning's remaining priorities?
Smith: The Lightning got a lot of their offseason heavy lifting done, from signing Point to moving Tyler Johnson’s contract to adding backup goalie Brian Elliott ($900K), depth defenseman Zach Bogosian (three years, $850K AAV) and some more depth up front.
They still need to re-sign some young RFAs like Ross Colton, Cal Foote, Alex Barre-Boulet and make sure they’re cap compliant. But a good chunk of their work is done.
