While there has been little to celebrate this season for the Syracuse football team, the Orange has at least made gamblers happy on occasion.
While SU dropped to a dismal 1-9 with a 36-29 loss to North Carolina State on Saturday, the Orange covered the 14-point spread to lift its record to 5-5 this season against the betting line.
If you plan on betting on the Orange this week against No. 2 Notre Dame, you’ll once again be getting a bunch of points. The website BetOnline listed the Fighting Irish as a 33.5-point favorite over Syracuse.
The over/under total points line was 52.5, according to the website Vegas Insider.
It’s the second time this season Syracuse has been more than a 30-point underdog. In October, Syracuse opened as a 37.5-point underdog against Clemson, and the line ballooned to 46.5 points at gametime. Syracuse played the Tigers tough that week, covering the historic spread in a 47-21 loss.
Notre Dame is unbeaten at 9-0 and coming off a 31-17 win over North Carolina on Friday. Quarterback Ian Book was 23-of-33 for 279 yards and a touchdown for the Irish, while Kyren Williams ran for 124 yards and a pair of touchdowns.
Syracuse has covered the point spread in its win over Georgia Tech and in losses to Pittsburgh, Boston College, Clemson and North Carolina State. Syracuse did not cover in losses to North Carolina, Duke, Liberty, Wake Forest and Louisville.
SU’s game at Notre Dame will kick off at 2:30 p.m. Saturday and be broadcast by NBC.
