The High Point University men's basketball team travels up I-40 to face triad rival Elon on Saturday (Nov 27.). Both teams were in action on Wednesday night so it will be a quick turnaround for both sides. High Point takes on Elon for the second year in a row, a season ago the two teams met for the first time since 2006. Saturday's game will be available to watch on Flosports (29.99 monthly fee). It will also be available on the High Point Panther Radio Network where "Voice of the Panthers" Daron Vaught will have the call. Coverage will start at 3:50 PM.

Matchup History

  • HPU and Elon last met a season ago when High Point won in overtime 70-66 on Dec 5th in front of a sold-out Millis Center. John-Michael Wright led HPU in points with 20 on the night. Cliff Thomas Jr. was the hero scoring the game-winner that lifted the Panthers over the Phoenix.
  • This will be the 164th time the two schools have met, with High Point leading the all-time series 87-76.
  • Head Coach Tubby Smith is 1-0 against the Phoenix facing them for the first time in his career a season ago. He currently holds a 3-2 record against teams from the Colonial Athletic Association.
  • Smith is familiar with Elon, having played the Phoenix 12 times during his playing career at High Point.

Across the Bench

  • Elon enters Saturday afternoon 1-0 after a victory over N.C. Wesleyan 82-52. Jared Gillens-Butler led the way for the Phoenix with 19 points while Hunter McIntosh was right behind him with 18 points on the night.
  • Elon was 13-21 overall a season ago and had a 7-11 record in the CAA. The Phoenix upset William & Mary who was seeded #2 in the CAA Quarterfinals. Elon fell 68-60 in the CAA semifinals to North Eastern.
  • HPU saw a great three-point shooting team in Davidson on Wednesday and the same can be said about the Elon team they will see on Saturday. Elon finished the season with 346 made threes which ranked the Phoenix third in the country in that category.

Panther Notes

I Know That's Wright

John-Michael Wright led the Panthers in scoring on Wednesday night against Davidson as he scored 29 points. The sophomore exploded in the second half for 22 points after only scoring seven in the first half. Wright was two shy of his career-high (31) which he scored against Gardner Webb on 1/23/20. It was the most points he had scored since 1/30/20 when he scored 30 against Campbell.

Budding Flowers

Freshman Ahmil Flowers made a strong first impression starting in his college debut and scored 14 points and a very efficient 60% shooting percentage on the night.

Slaying

Denny Slay provided a big spark for the Panthers off the bench as he powered a 12-4 run for HPU with ten points in that run late in the game against the Wildcats. Slay hit a three with 6:07 left to play.

Chairman of The Boards

Alex Holt was the leading rebounder in N.C. in high school a year ago, Holt showed why in his first college game as led HPU in rebounds with six.

Up Next: HPU returns to the Millis Center for the first time this season to host North Florida on Saturday (Dec. 5) at 2:00 PM.
