COLLEGE PARK, Md. –– Cam Davis (Sr., Battlefield, Mo.) scored 20 second-half points –– which included the 1,000th point of his career and some key conversions from the foul line in the game's waning moments –– to help the Navy (2-1) men's basketball team stave off a furious Mount St. Mary's (1-1) rally and hang on for a 73-67 win at the XFINITY Center in College Park, Md.

"I like the resilience of our kids," said Navy head coach Ed DeChellis.  "We didn't play perfect down the stretch; we have to play better.  Mount St. Mary's made some really tough shots.  I think maybe two of them were bankers, but sometimes that's how the game goes and we were able to overcome that."

The teams volleyed the lead 13 times in the first half.  The largest advantage for either team in the first 20 minutes of play was four points, and the opening stanza ended with the Mids, who were playing their second game in 24 hours and third in 99 hours, clinging to a 32-31 advantage.

DeChellis lamented the slow second-half start for the Mids in their game Friday against Maryland.  The Terrapins were 4-5 from the field at the start of second half to push their cushion out to 14 points early in the frame in what would turn out to be an 82-52 Navy loss.  Today, the Mids scored the first eight points of the second half as part of a 15-2 run that gave them a 47-33 lead with just over 13 minutes showing on the clock.

The lead would grow to as many as 16 points at both 51-35 and 53-37.  However, the cushion was quickly dwindled down to four points at 54-50 with 6:38 remaining.  Navy pushed the lead back to 10 points at 60-50 with 4:08 on the clock thanks to Davis making a pair of free throws, the first of which made him the 25th Mid to tally 1,000 career points.

It was soon a 13-point game at 64-51 with 2:44 left to play when things started to change dramatically.  The Mountaineers scored on each of their next six possessions to whittle their deficit down to 68-67 with 26 seconds remaining.  And while Mount St. Mary's scored 15 points on their six trips down the floor, Navy had, in order, a missed shot with an offensive rebound followed a shot clock violation, a pair of made free throws by Davis, a 10-second violation, a pair of made free throws by Greg Summers (Jr., Ocoee, Fla.) and another turnover in the backcourt.

Davis was quickly fouled after the Mids inbounded the ball following the field goal by Mount St. Mary;s that made it a one-point game.  He strode to the foul line and again made both attempts to make the score 70-67 with 22 seconds still to play.  A missed three-point attempt by Mount St. Mary's was gathered in by Davis, and he was again fouled with 11 seconds left on the clock.  He again walked to the charity stripe and again converted both tries to push the advantage out to 72-67.  The Mountaineers tried another three-point shot and it too missed its mark.  Tyler Nelson (So., Monroe, N.C.) was there to snare the defensive carom and he was fouled with two seconds left.  He made one of his two efforts to close out the scoring.

"Cam was tremendous with making his free throws down the stretch," said DeChellis.  "Greg made two big free throws down the stretch.  That was the separation we needed.

"Really proud of our kids with playing here yesterday and getting waxed, then coming back this afternoon and putting together a solid game other than some things down the stretch.

Both teams made 25 field goals on the afternoon.  Navy shot 47.2 percent from the floor and Mount St. Mary's made 44.6 percent of its shots.  The Mountaineers held an 11-4 edge in three-point field goals made, which included a 6-1 advantage in the second half.  Navy balanced out that deficit by going 19-22 (86.4%) from the foul line for the game in comparison to the 6-10 (60%) effort by Mount St. Mary's.  This included second-half marks of 14-17 for the Mids and 2-6 for the Mountaineers.

Davis was 5-8 from the field and 10-10 from the free throw line to account for his 20-point second-half performance.  He accounted for just under half of Navy's 41 points scored after intermission.  Davis ended the game with 26 points to nearly match his career-best effort of 28, but surpass the 25 points he had combined to score in Navy's first two games of the season.  He is the first Mid in three years and three days to reach the 1,000-point plateau (Shawn Anderson, Nov. 25, 2017).  Davis needed 96 games to score 1,000 points, which ranks 18th among the 25 Mids who have attained the milestone.

Navy will close out its season-opening stretch of four games in seven days Tuesday when the Mids travel to Washington, D.C., to face Georgetown in the university's on-campus McDonough Arena.  The game will air nationally on the CBS Sports Network starting at 6 p.m.
